Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs for Beginners

How often do I need to do Pilates to see results?
Practicing Pilates 2-3 times a week will give you the best results. Some people find that 1-2 times weekly is effective as cross training to enhance their performance in other exercise and sports. Private sessions provide the best and quickest results as your instructor tailors the sessions to your needs and goals.

What can I expect on my first visit?
Start by arriving 10 minutes before your appointment to fill out our short physical history and waiver forms.

Taking a New Client Private Session? — Your instructor will assess your physical history and goals and work with you to create a Pilates program that’s best for you.

Trying your First Class? — You’ll get a brief physical assessment and a quick lesson in setting up your equipment for the class. Due to time constraints in classes, we prefer that you take an Introductory Private Session before taking a class if you’ve never experienced the equipment or Pilates before.

What do I wear?
Any comfortable, stretchy fitness clothing that allows you to move but fits enough to allow your instructor to assess your alignment and posture. Bike shorts are recommended under loose shorts to keep you covered when your legs are up in the air. Pilates is normally practiced in bare feet for better grip and foot dexterity but you’re welcome to wear socks.

Will Pilates improve my yoga practice?
Yes! Pilates will train your body to support your joints through the poses. You’ll learn how to resist “falling” into stretches and overloading your joints in the spine, the shoulders, the hips and knees. Build a supple core strength to balance your poses and flow through the transitions.

Will I lose weight?
You’ll get a leaner, sculpted body from Pilates but lifestyle changes are a more important factor in weight loss. Most importantly, if you’re participating in a rigorous workout program for metabolic change, you’ll get the postural and core support that you need to avoid the setbacks of injury.

My Doctor recommended Pilates for my back, neck, shoulder, knee…pain. Do I start with classes?
It depends on the extent of your pain and/or injury. We normally prefer to start with a New Client Private Session so we can work with you to build a plan that’s best for your physical health and fits your time and budget. We want to set you up to easily (and quickly) start enjoying the benefits of sound Pilates training.
